(2B mechanical pencil, A5 sketchbook)
In another attempt to return to the practice of drawing and sketching, I've recently joined the Everyday Matters group. My hope is that, by at least attempting the weekly challenge set there, I might re-establish the sketching habit.
The latest Challenge is "No. 205 - Draw a soda can." I don't drink anything as awful as soda, but this is an American Ginger Ale can, crushed after doing service with a measure of golden rum. I intended to put on some of the printing, but decided in the end that I liked it without.

Lovely shading job :)
Very nice... I like it a lot. - Greg
This looks mysterious and perhaps an overlooked clue in an investagation. May go well with Rum...for me coke is too sweet with it...
Love the lighting. Nice job.
Thanks, everyone. I enjoyed the challenge.
You've done an excellent job on a very interesting angle. I love your style.
Thanks, seesue. I hope you'll call back again.
You did a real good job on the can. I try to do at least one sketch a day. BTW, I am hoping you have heard Leonard Cohen's back on boogie street. One of my favorites.
Yvette
Yvette - a sketch a day would be wonderful, although I do have to maintain my main painting work. The great Leonard Cohen song is the origin of my blog's title. You'll see that some of the headings in the sidebar are song titles of his, too.
very dramatic...
makes me want to go smush my own can and draw
Isn't ginger ale soda?
yeah, really nice.
Anne -- technically, yes, ginger ale is soda, in that it's carbonated, but I think of it as a mixer. "Soda" or"pop" as I would call it, I think of as Coke, Sprite, Dr Pepper ...
Andrea -- having seen your work, I appreciate the compliment.
Wonderfully interesting sketch! I don't drink soda at all, but ginger ale sounds good --- think I'd like a bit of cranberry juice in mine!
This drawing is amazing. very good. Love it.
Nice work. Good shading, shadows, good all around job.
Best wishes,
Trish
Thanks Vicky, Ricardo and Trish. Welcome to you all.
Hi Harry, ginger ale rules! Thanks for your comment on my blog. As for the umbrella reference - the British call umbrellas "brollys".
Oh, come now. "Brolly" is only a colloquialism; we do use the proper term quite often :)
Ginger ale IS soda, but I also make an exception for ginger, drinking-wise--but in my case, I like ginger beer.
If that were my drawing, I would be doing the Happy Dance all over the house.
Thanks, Hovawart, maybe you can indulge in a little vicarious Happy Dancing. I like ginger beer, too, but only if it's Fentimans.
I drink plenty of things as awful as soda. :)
This is an extremely nice drawing. The light on the top of the can is spot-on.
Believe me, E-J, I fully support your right to drink as much soda as you want.
Glad you like the drawing.
Oh, dear, I went all the way to London this spring and missed learning about Fentimans! Guess I'll have to go back...although the website says I should be able to find it here, now, I haven't seen it yet.
I have to declare a partisan interest in Fnetimans, because the firm started in my home town of Gateshead. When I was a boy, we used to get weekly deliveries from the back of the Fentimans "pop lorry" :0)
Absolutely AMAZING...
Wow. I hope artists really appreciate your defined ilustration!
Thanks; yes, it seems to have been popular.
