Cup with Barbara Rae

(2B mechanical pencil, wax crayons, A5 sketchbook)

Still waiting for the Night Station to dry, so today I thought I might have look at the list of old Everyday Matters Challenges. I picked out No.4 - Draw your mug or cup. The cup I chose is an old kitchen cup, badly made, with no decoration, but I've always liked it for it's fragile irregularities. It's good for mixing up curry spices or preparing a marinade.

While looking for something to lay it on, I absentmindedly set it down on the excellent Barbara Rae monograph - and found my subject. I rather like the effect of pencil set against wax crayon and might use it again.

Just seeing th" Back To The Cup" title in the email jolted me---as I have returned to the cup before and once again am doing another spread I won't post, as it's for a future project. So it was running thu my mind that the cup really is quite the personal thing---how a favorite becomes and so forth. I sure enjoyed seeing this one of your
pages..

I know what you mean, Winna. I found myself really warming to this cup as I drew it - more than I thought possible. I think cups could indeed be worthy of further study.

Thanks, April. The other blog is a long way from being functional, I'm afraid. Only one painting approriate to it, and that not quite finished. However, now that Xmas is over and things seem to be on the move, who knows ...

I rather like it too! You've done an excellent job. The mixing of media works well in this painting.

If you want to see some killer waxed crayon art, you should check out Don Marco. He works in Crayola Crayons! When I fist saw his work I just about fell over. I had no idea such things were possible with wax crayons.

Hi Harry
Your very veratile. You have got me again with your reds.
Theres allsorts going on here. I want to keep looking at the shape of the cup. Fascinating.

Ana - welcome. Don Marco is, as you say, quite remarkable in his use of Crayolas, although the work itself isn't entirely to my taste.

Trevor - I'm glad I can still surprise you, but it wouldn't be fair of me to take all the credit for the reds in this one. I think Barbara Rae, whose painting is on the front of the book, must have a share :)

I like the cubist feel of the cup....and the almost poster look of the color and letters....nice piece.
