A Week in Staithes (3)

Houses above Staithes Beck (4B pencil in 21 x 26 cm sketchbook)

Some of the best subjects in Staithes are concentrated on and round the Beck which runs through the bottom of the valley. This drawing was done at the upper end of the town where a set of concrete stepping stones allow you to cross the Beck.

What attracted me was the diagonal arrangement and I'm keen to see how it works out as a painting.. At the time I planned to make more of this area but I soon came to realise that standing still in the bottom of the valley with the freezing wind blowing in my face was bearable for only a short while. A visit to the warming atmosphere of the Royal George was soon called for.

This is a lovely composition for a painting! I love diagonals. If they don't exist in my composition, I create visual ones with color! Your link is beautiful. Sure would love to be there!

Thanks, Susan, and welcome to my blog. I like the way you use diagonals in your work - I think it may prove to be more of a challenge for me, but I'm certainly interested in trying it out.

Is that an antenna I see on one of the rooftops? You don't see these very often in the U.S. anymore. It added a bit of unexpected interest. Glad you added it.

Yes, agree - a very interesting composition.

Timaree -- It is a tv antenna, one of those little details I like to include in my drawings. You don't see so many antennas in the UK these days either, but tv reception in Staithes is very poor. Most of the time I struggled to get a mobile phone signal too.
