Cotter pins locked the pedal arm on to the drive shaft of the bike.
I remember replacing mine once.
Worn pins would cause the pedal to jerk dangerously when you put pressure on them.
Halfords used to sell them!
So I've since discovered with a bit of googling. Thanks.
