Korčula
Korcula, from Neno's Rooms, 16 Sept 2012
(0.8 marker in A5 sketchbook)
We spent our second week in Korčula, a beautiful little island off the Pelješac peninsula.. After the somewhat frenetic atmosphere of Dubrovnik, Korčula provided a haven of calm.
Regular readers of this blog may remember that on a previous visit to Croatia we've stayed in Korčula before; in fact, we stayed at the same Neno's Rooms, though this time Neno gave us a bigger apartment with a better view of the Old Town. It's interesting to compare the view I drew this time with the one from the previous trip:

A Week in Staithes (4)
Yellow Houses at Staithes
(Disposable fountain pen with watercolour pencils in 21 x 26 cm sketchbook)
No wind abatement, so by now I was looking for places where I might get a bit of shelter. Half way up a path that climbed the south side of the valley, I found I could look across the roofs to the other side.
I really liked the yellow houses over there, so I was disappointed when the lines from the disposable pen ran into the yellow pencil and spoiled its purity

Auchterarder: 3rd Day

Plant Stalks, Shinafoot (Pilot disposable fountain pen, sketchbook)
I've been checking out the quarry but so far haven't found what I think I'm looking for. In particular, there's no special motif I'd like to spend some time exploring, although there are probably rock forms that might repay looking at again. Today, however, I drew these plant stalks in the garden.

Exploring Mallorca: Agave 3

(Watercolour, Pilot disposable fountain pen, A5 sketchbook)
This weather really does get me down. No snow today, but some heavy rain and even heavier skies. All of which makes for a less than agreeable creative mood.
On hearing that the Club was likely to be deserted today, I gave it a miss again and worked on this sketchbook watercolour of another agave plant. Although it's rather dark, it brought memories of at least a bit of Mediterranean sunshine.

Exploring Mallorca: Agave 2

Agave 2 (Pencil, Inktense pencils, Pilot disposable fountain pen, A5 sketchbook)
Some of the media fought one another on this. I drew it out in 2B pencil, then put on the Inktense pencil. This made the pencil lines fade, so I had to go over the lines and some of the darks with the disposable pen. The final result isn't too bad, although the computer has conspired with the media to alter the look of the original (the red, for instance, is much more even in the sketch)

More Wansbeck

Wansbeck Houses (Pilot disposable fountain pen, sketchbook)
I was a bit lost for something to do at the Art Club yesterday, so I took along this drawing to see where I might get with it on a small board. Instead of including the boat in the foreground, I've lifted in (and reversed) the little boat with the cabin on the right of this drawing:

I'm not sure that it's going too well. The lack of any colour notes is making me fly by the seat of my pants, and I find that disconcerting. But I thought it would be good practice. I didn't have my camera with me, so I'll let you see how it goes next week.
