Old Drawings #44

Central Motorway (Charcoal on A2 cartridge paper)

Another in the University Drawing for Sculpture series. I took my life in my hands and climbed over a railing to get right next to the motorway. If there's a more hurried look to this drawing, put it down to freezing wind, cars and lorries rushing by only feet away and really horrible fumes. I didn't stay long.

Surprised you didn't take a picture? Looks a good spot for a gritty urban photo!

You miss the point. It was project to make a sculpture based on an urban *drawing*. And the drawings had to be shown at the end of the day.

Harry, these drawings continue to fascinate me. They are superb. I love the abstractness of 42 and 43. They would make terrific jump off points for paintings but they have so much integrity in themselves. Have you seen the work of Werner Pfarr who lives in the south of France? You will find a link to him on my blog - not sure how to insert a link here but he does only drawings. I think you'd enjoy them.

Thanks, Sheila. I began to realise recently how much my drawings mean to me. I've only ever sold a handful, compared to numerous paintings, because I don't want to part with them.

I really like Werner Pfarr's work. He does what I've always found difficult - find structure in vegetation. Thanks for pointing me at him!
