Old Drawings #51

After Rain [Charcoal, compressed charcoal on A2 (?) cartridge paper]
Private Collection

Done in 1998 or 1999, this drawing is a view of the Tyne Bridge from a curious little concrete balcony that juts out over The Side. In 1999, it led to this painting, which I sold through a gallery in Leeds. I could have sold it several times over (the Geordie diaspora?), but later I was a little dismayed to come across it online, for sale "still unwrapped". Whereabouts are now uncertain.

I really like these old drawings - powerful and with a strong sense of place

Thanks, Vivien. The interesting part will be when I get to the end of the Old Drawings. The intention will be to carry on with some New Drawings. What will they look like, I wonder?

Oh what a disappointment. Maybe they meant they wrapped it again though. In fact, although I think that is a very successful painting if I had a choice I would have bought the drawing in preference. It has an integrity - a truth about it.

Regarding the drawing, I notice a diversity of textures and marks that really intrigue me. Yet, you still keep the unity because we understand the scope of the scene.

Brilliant, really.

The 'Private Collector' of the original charcoal is still very pleased with it, and the impact it makes on visitors. People think I've got taste!

Sheila -- You're right about the drawing. I suspect that because it was produced in about two hours, it has something of the moment about it.

Casey -- thank you.

Kevin -- Glad you still like it. Is it A2 or A1? I forget.

For sale, still unwrapped? Poo! I adore your drawing Harry, It really captures the mood and the place (as I remember it) and conjures up such fond memories.
