New Painting

Cars and the Central Hotel (work in progress)

Yesterday was a miserable day for weather - rain and fog for most of the day, so I was glad to have another new painting to start.

Don't judge this too soon. It's the work of only about an hour and a half, the colours are only approximated in most cases and the red underpainting is showing through in a lot of places.

Nevertheless, I think this could prove to be a successful addition to my transport works.

I do hope you are going to keep some of that red underpainting. It was the first thing I noticed, and I really like it.

I used to teach a few printmaking classes, and one of the silly things I used to say to students was, "If you can't make it good, make it red." But I think this is a really good painting, only made better with the red underpainting showing.

I found your blog in TIME GOES BY

I like the sense of motion in this. I also like the underpainting showing through. It's great to see works in progress.

What can I say? In all probability, most of the red underpainting will go. There's no doubting that it immediately attracts, but does it work in the painting's terms? I don't think so, but then I have a much-written about problem with red and green. My method with this kind of underpainting is to continue covering it, but maybe leaving parts that I think work at the time. In any event, there are almost always little flecks here and there which help to energise the picture. but not on an immediately obvious level.

[20th Century Woman - TIME GOES BY is a good blog.]
